Diflucan (fluconazole) is a prescription drug used to treat fungal infections of the mouth, throat, esophagus, lungs, bladder, genital area, and blood. It is also used to treat candidiasis (thrush, a yeast infection that can occur in the throat or mouth). Diflucan is in a class of drugs called azole antifungals. It works by stopping the growth of fungus.
Diflucan is available as a generic drug. Generic drugs usually cost less than the brand-name version. In some cases, they may not be available in every strength or form as the brand-name drug.
Diflucan is also available as an oral suspension.
Diflucan is used to treat infections caused by Candida, such as thrush in adults and children.
Diflucan is also used to treat other types of fungal infections, such as cryptococcal meningitis (a fungal infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord).
Diflucan is not for use in people with certain medical conditions.
Do not take Diflucan if you are allergic to fluconazole, or any of the ingredients in Diflucan.
To make sure Diflucan is safe for you, tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had any of the following conditions:
liver disease
kidney disease
diabetes
a heart rhythm disorder
a history of Long QT syndrome
Diflucan can cause serious side effects. Seek medical treatment immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking Diflucan:
an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or diarrhea;
fever, chills, or a sore throat;
shortness of breath;
yellowing of the skin or eyes;
dark urine;
seizures; or
unusual tiredness or weakness.
Diflucan may cause other side effects. Call your healthcare provider if you have any new or worsening side effects while taking Diflucan.
Diflucan oral suspension (liquid) is available in 10-mL vials. Each mL of oral suspension contains 10 mg of fluconazole.
Diflucan oral suspension (liquid) is available in a prefilled 60-mL bottle. Each mL of oral suspension contains 10 mg of fluconazole.
Diflucan tablets are available in 50-mg, 150-mg, and 200-mg strengths.
Diflucan capsules are available in 30-mg, 50-mg, and 150-mg strengths.
Diflucan for oral suspension is available in 10-mg, 40-mg, and 80-mg strengths.
Diflucan for injection is available in a 100-mg vial.
