Omnicef (cefdinir) is a 3rd generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat certain types of bacterial infections, including those of the lungs, sinuses, ears, skin, and urinary tract. Omnicef is also used to treat bronchitis, pneumonia, and some types of skin infections. Omnicef belongs to a class of drugs known as cephalosporin antibiotics.
Omnicef is available in generic form. Common side effects of Omnicef include:
diarrhea
stomach upset
nausea
vomiting
rash
headache
dizziness

severe stomach pain
bloody or watery diarrhea
fever
rash with blistering and peeling
yellowing of the skin or eyes
dark urine
unusual tiredness

Omnicef may interact with other antibiotics, antacids, probenecid, or blood thinners. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. During pregnancy, Omnicef should be used only when prescribed. This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Omnicef dosing information
Usual Adult Dose for Bacterial Infection:
Oral:
300 mg every 12 hours for 10 days
Maximum dose: 1.2 g/day
-The total duration of Omnicef therapy should not exceed 14 days.
Uses:
Omnicef is indicated for the treatment of patients with mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms in the specific conditions listed below.
Respiratory Tract Infections
Omnicef is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate upper respiratory tract infections, including tonsillitis, sinusitis, and pharyngitis.
Skin and Skin Structure Infections
Omnicef is indicated for the treatment of skin and skin structure infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms.
Urinary Tract Infections
Omnicef is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate urinary tract infections caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms.
Otitis Media
Omnicef is indicated for the treatment of otitis media caused by susceptible strains of the designated microorganisms.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
For the treatment of most infections, Omnicef should be given at a dosage of 300 mg every 12 hours, or 600 mg once daily. The total duration of Omnicef therapy should not exceed 14 days.
For the treatment of skin and skin structure infections, Omnicef should be given at a dosage of 400 mg every 12 hours for 10 days.
For the treatment of otitis media, Omnicef should be given at a dosage of 300 mg once daily for 10 days.
Omnicef may be taken without regard to meals.
HOW SUPPLIED
Omnicef for oral suspension is supplied as a powder which, when reconstituted as directed, contains 125 mg cefdinir/5 mL or 250 mg cefdinir/5 mL or 400 mg cefdinir/5 mL.
Omnicef capsules are available in strengths of 125 mg, 250 mg, and 300 mg cefdinir (cefdinir anhydrous).
Omnicef for oral suspension is available in 125 mg/5 mL and 250 mg/5 mL strengths (when mixed).
Omnicef powder for oral suspension: 125 mg/5 mL or 250 mg/5 mL or 400 mg/5 mL
Omnicef capsules: 125 mg, 250 mg, and 300 mg
Omnicef for oral suspension: 125 mg/5 mL and 250 mg/5 mL
Storage:
Omnicef for oral suspension should be stored below 86°F (30°C). Protect from light. Omnicef capsules should be stored at room temperature, 59° to 86°F (15° to 30°C).
