Before taking this medicine

You should not take this medicine if you are allergic to panmycin or other tetracycline antibiotics such as doxycycline, minocycline, or tetracycline. To make sure you can safely take panmycin, tell your doctor if you have any of these other conditions:

  • kidney disease;
  • liver disease;
  • asthma or sulfite allergy;
  • a history of intestinal problems, such as colitis;
  • if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

How should I take Panmycin?

Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Panmycin can be taken with or without food.

Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. To be sure you get the correct dose, measure the suspension with a dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.

Take Panmycin on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.

Do not take iron supplements, multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives within 2 hours before or after taking Panmycin. These products can make it harder for your body to absorb the medicine.

For the best effect, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time every day.

Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.

Panmycin is usually given for 5 to 10 days. Follow your doctor's instructions.

If you take this medicine for an extended period of time, you may need frequent medical tests at your doctor's office. Your kidney and liver function may also need to be checked.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at your next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

Overdose symptoms may include severe forms of some of the side effects listed in this medication guide.

What should I avoid while taking Panmycin?

Do not take iron supplements, multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives within 2 hours before or after taking Panmycin. These products can make it harder for your body to absorb the medicine.

Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds). Panmycin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and increase your risk of sunburn and skin cancer. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when you are outdoors.

Avoid taking antacids, vitamin or mineral supplements, sucralfate (Carafate), or didanosine (Videx) powder or chewable tablets within 6 hours before or 2 hours after you take Panmycin. These other products can make it harder for your body to absorb panmycin.
