Common use
Prilosec is indicated for the treatment of frequent heartburn occurring two or more days per week. It is clinically proven to manage symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), including heartburn, regurgitation, and stomach discomfort. Medical professionals often recommend it for short-term therapy to control acid production and provide symptomatic relief. Patients typically use it for a 14-day course, which can be repeated every four months if needed, though persistent symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.
Dosage and direction
The recommended dosage for adults 18 years and older is one 20 mg tablet taken once daily, with a glass of water before eating in the morning. Tablets should be swallowed whole; they must not be crushed, chewed, or split. Treatment is intended for 14 days, and it may take 1 to 4 days for full effect. Do not use for more than 14 days or more often than every 4 months unless directed by a doctor. For optimal results, take at the same time each day and avoid lying down for 30 minutes after administration.
Precautions
Do not use if you have trouble or pain swallowing food, vomiting with blood, or bloody or black stools. These may be signs of a serious condition. Consult a doctor before use if you have had heartburn for over 3 months, experience chest pain, unexplained weight loss, nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, or frequent wheezing. Do not use if you are allergic to omeprazole. Long-term use may be associated with low magnesium levels; notify your doctor if you experience abnormal heart rate, jitteriness, dizziness, or muscle weakness. Use with caution if you have liver disease.
Contraindications
Prilosec is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to omeprazole or any component of the formulation. It should not be used by patients taking rilpivirine-containing products due to the risk of reduced antiviral efficacy. Avoid use in those with suspected gastric malignancy, as symptom relief may delay diagnosis. Not intended for immediate relief of heartburn; for rapid symptom control, consider an antacid. Do not use in children under 18 years of age unless specifically advised by a healthcare provider.
Possible side effects
Common side effects may include headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and flatulence. In rare cases, severe adverse reactions such as Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, acute interstitial nephritis, or cutaneous lupus erythematosus have been reported. Long-term use may increase the risk of bone fractures, vitamin B12 deficiency, and hypomagnesemia. Discontinue use and seek medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness) or symptoms of kidney impairment (changes in urine output).
Drug interaction
Prilosec may interact with clopidogrel, reducing its antiplatelet effect. It can alter the absorption of drugs dependent on gastric pH, such as ketoconazole, iron salts, and digoxin. Concurrent use with methotrexate may increase methotrexate serum levels. Omeprazole may inhibit CYP2C19, potentially affecting medications like diazepam, warfarin, and phenytoin. Always inform your healthcare provider of all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and supplements you are taking before starting Prilosec.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. Consistency in dosing is important for maintaining acid control, but occasional missed doses are unlikely to significantly impact overall efficacy.
Overdose
In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention or contact a Poison Control Center. Symptoms may include confusion, drowsiness, blurred vision, tachycardia, nausea, sweating, flushing, headache, and dry mouth. Management is supportive; omeprazole is not dialyzable. Provide healthcare professionals with details regarding the quantity ingested and time of consumption.
Storage
Store at room temperature (20β25Β°C or 68β77Β°F) in a dry place. Keep the bottle tightly closed and protect from moisture and light. Do not remove the desiccant from the bottle. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging.
