Dosage varies based on indication, renal function, and immune status. For genital herpes: 200mg five times daily for 10 days (initial episode) or 400mg twice daily for 5 days (recurrent episode). For suppression: 400mg twice daily. Herpes zoster: 800mg five times daily for 7–10 days. Chickenpox ( immunocompetent adults and children >40kg): 800mg four times daily for 5 days. Take with plenty of water; may be taken with or without food. Dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with renal impairment (creatinine clearance <50mL/min).
