Eukroma Cream is a topical dermatological preparation containing Hydroquinone as its active pharmaceutical ingredient. It is a first-line therapeutic agent prescribed by dermatologists for the management of various hyperpigmentation disorders. This cream works by selectively inhibiting the enzymatic conversion of tyrosine to melanin within the melanocytes, leading to a gradual and significant lightening of darkened skin areas. Its formulation is designed for targeted application, offering a clinically proven approach to achieving a more even skin tone.

Features

  • Contains 2% w/w or 4% w/w Hydroquinone as the active ingredient
  • Emollient-based, non-comedogenic cream formulation
  • Designed for topical application only
  • Available in 15g and 30g tubes
  • Requires a prescription in many regions

Benefits

  • Effectively reduces the appearance of dark spots, age spots, and melasma.
  • Promotes a more uniform and even skin tone by targeting excess melanin production.
  • Clinically proven to lighten hyperpigmented areas with consistent use.
  • Can be used as part of a comprehensive skincare regimen under medical supervision.
  • Helps restore confidence by addressing visible skin discoloration.
  • Formulated to minimize irritation while maximizing depigmenting efficacy.

Common use

Eukroma Cream is primarily indicated for the treatment of hyperpigmentation conditions. This includes melasma (chloasma), which often presents as brown or gray-brown patches on the face, particularly on the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, chin, and above the upper lip. It is also commonly prescribed for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which occurs following skin trauma such as acne, burns, or other injuries. Furthermore, it is used for solar lentigines (age spots or liver spots) caused by cumulative sun exposure, and other forms of epidermal melanosis where an inhibition of melanogenesis is the desired therapeutic outcome. It is not intended for use on generalized vitiligo or for overall skin lightening.

Dosage and direction

Apply a thin film of Eukroma Cream to the affected area(s) twice daily, or as directed by a physician. Morning and evening applications are typical. The cream should be applied only to the hyperpigmented spots, not to the entire face or surrounding normal skin. Gently massage into the skin until fully absorbed. Hands should be washed thoroughly before and after application to prevent transfer to unintended areas. The duration of treatment is typically limited; continuous use should not exceed 3-4 months without a medical review. A sunscreen with a high SPF (30 or greater) must be used during the day, as hydroquinone increases photosensitivity. Treatment should be discontinued once the desired lightening is achieved.

Precautions

Prior to initiating treatment, a patch test on a small, inconspicuous area is recommended to check for sensitivity or allergic reaction. This cream is for external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, eyelids, lips, mucous membranes, and broken or inflamed skin. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. Due to increased sun sensitivity, sun exposure should be minimized. Protective clothing and a broad-spectrum sunscreen are mandatory during treatment and for several weeks after discontinuation. Discontinue use and consult a doctor if excessive irritation, redness, itching, or blistering occurs. This medication should not be used on children unless specifically advised by a pediatric dermatologist. It is not recommended for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding without explicit medical guidance.

Contraindications

Eukroma Cream is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to hydroquinone or any other component of the formulation. Its use is also contraindicated in patients with a history of allergic reaction to sunscreens or other topical bleaching agents. It should not be used on individuals with diagnosed ochronosis, a blue-black discoloration of the skin that can be exacerbated by hydroquinone. Use is not advised for patients with pre-existing severe dry skin or pre-malignant and malignant lesions of the skin. Concomitant use with other topical agents containing hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, or other strong oxidizing agents is contraindicated due to the risk of skin discoloration.

Possible side effects

The most common side effects are mild and transient skin irritation, including redness, mild burning, stinging, and dryness at the application site. These often subside as the skin acclimates to the treatment. Less frequently, patients may experience dermatitis, inflammation, or allergic contact dermatitis, characterized by more pronounced itching and swelling. Rare but serious side effects include exogenous ochronosis (a permanent blue-black darkening of the skin), hypopigmentation (unnatural lightening) of the surrounding normal skin, and nail discoloration. Systemic absorption is minimal with proper use, but prolonged and excessive application over large areas could theoretically lead to more systemic effects, though this is exceedingly rare.

Drug interaction

Concurrent use of Eukroma Cream with other topical medications that cause skin dryness or peeling (such as retinoids like tretinoin, or alpha-hydroxy acids like glycolic acid) may increase the potential for skin irritation. A dermatologist should supervise such combination therapy. It should not be mixed with or applied immediately after products containing hydrogen peroxide or benzoyl peroxide, as this can cause a temporary dark brown discoloration of the skin. There are no well-documented significant interactions with systemic medications, but it is crucial to inform your doctor of all products you are using on your skin.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled application, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to compensate for a missed one, as this increases the risk of skin irritation and side effects. Consistency is important for efficacy, but the occasional missed dose is not typically detrimental to the overall treatment outcome.

Overdose

Topical overdose is characterized by severe local skin reactions, including intense burning, stinging, redness, peeling, and extreme dryness. Systemic overdose from topical application is highly improbable due to limited absorption. However, if the cream is ingested orally, it is a medical emergency. Symptoms of oral ingestion may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), shortness of breath, cyanosis (bluish skin from lack of oxygen), convulsions, and collapse due to methemoglobinemia. In case of accidental ingestion, immediately contact a poison control center or seek emergency medical attention. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed by medical personnel.

Storage

Store Eukroma Cream at room temperature, between 15Β°C and 30Β°C (59Β°F and 86Β°F). Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use to protect the contents from light and air, which can degrade the active ingredient. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use the cream if it has changed color or consistency, or if it is past the expiration date printed on the packaging.
