Mentax (butenafine hydrochloride) 1% cream is a potent, prescription-strength topical antifungal medication formulated for the effective treatment of a range of superficial fungal skin infections. Its unique chemical structure allows for both fungicidal and fungistatic activity, targeting the pathogen’s cell membrane to disrupt its integrity and inhibit growth. Clinically proven to offer rapid symptom relief and a low recurrence rate, it represents a first-line therapeutic option for dermatologists and primary care providers. This comprehensive profile provides the essential information required for its safe and effective application in a clinical setting.

Features

  • Active Ingredient: Butenafine Hydrochloride 1%
  • Dosage Form: Topical Cream
  • Inactive Components: Purified Water, Cetostearyl Alcohol, Ceteth-20, Benzyl Alcohol, and Mineral Oil
  • Mechanism of Action: Inhibits squalene epoxidase, a key enzyme in ergosterol biosynthesis, leading to ergosterol depletion and accumulation of toxic squalene within the fungal cell
  • Spectrum of Activity: Demonstrates high efficacy against Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, and Malassezia furfur
  • Presentation: 15g, 30g, and 45g tubes

Benefits

  • Provides potent fungicidal (kills fungus) and fungistatic (inhibits fungal growth) action for comprehensive treatment.
  • Offers rapid onset of action, with many patients experiencing symptomatic relief from itching, burning, and scaling within the first few days of application.
  • Delivers a high cure rate and a significantly lower rate of relapse compared to some older azole antifungals due to its sustained reservoir effect in the skin.
  • Features a convenient once-daily dosing regimen, which promotes better patient adherence to the full treatment course.
  • Formulated with emollient bases that help soothe irritated skin and restore the skin barrier while treating the underlying infection.
  • Provides a targeted, localized treatment with minimal systemic absorption, reducing the risk of systemic side effects.

Common use

Mentax cream is primarily indicated for the treatment of the following dermatophyte infections:

  • Tinea Pedis (Athlete’s Foot): Characterized by itching, scaling, and fissuring, typically between the toes and on the soles of the feet.
  • Tinea Corporis (Ringworm of the Body): Presents as circular, red, scaly patches with raised borders on the trunk, arms, or legs.
  • Tinea Cruris (Jock Itch): Manifests as a red, itchy rash in the warm, moist areas of the groin, inner thighs, and buttocks.
  • Tinea (Pityriasis) Versicolor: A common fungal infection caused by Malassezia species that causes discolored, scaly patches on the trunk and proximal extremities.

A proper diagnosis by a healthcare professional is essential before initiation of therapy to confirm a fungal etiology.

Dosage and direction

  • For Tinea Pedis: Apply a thin layer of Mentax cream to cover the affected area and approximately 1 inch of the surrounding healthy skin once daily. The typical treatment duration is 4 weeks, or for one week after all signs and symptoms have cleared.
  • For Tinea Corporis and Tinea Cruris: Apply a thin layer to the affected area and the immediate surrounding skin once daily. The typical treatment duration is 2 weeks.
  • For Tinea Versicolor: Apply a thin layer to the affected area once daily. The typical treatment duration is 2 weeks.
  • Administration: Wash and dry the affected area thoroughly before application. Gently massage the cream into the skin until it is absorbed. Wash hands immediately after application, unless the hands are the treated area.

Precautions

  • For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, nostrils, mouth, vagina, and other mucous membranes.
  • If irritation or sensitivity occurs, discontinue use and consult a physician.
  • Do not use occlusive dressings or wraps unless specifically directed by a physician, as they may increase systemic absorption and the risk of adverse reactions.
  • Use with caution on areas of skin that are severely excoriated, as increased percutaneous absorption may occur.
  • This medication is not intended for the treatment of nail or scalp fungal infections (onychomycosis or tinea capitis).

Contraindications

Mentax cream is contraindicated in patients with a known history of hypersensitivity to butenafine hydrochloride, any other allylamine antifungals, or to any of the inactive ingredients in the formulation.

Possible side effect

While generally well-tolerated, the following local reactions at the application site have been reported:

  • Burning sensation
  • Itching (pruritus)
  • Irritation
  • Stinging
  • Erythema (redness)
  • Contact dermatitis These reactions are typically mild and transient. Systemic side effects are rare due to minimal absorption.

Drug interaction

Formal drug interaction studies have not been conducted with topical butenafine. Given the minimal systemic absorption (less than 1%), clinically significant drug interactions are not anticipated. However, always inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are using, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products.

Missed dose

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Topical overdose is unlikely. Excessive application may lead to increased local adverse effects such as severe redness, itching, burning, or irritation. In case of accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention or contact a Poison Control Center. Symptoms of ingestion may be consistent with those of the inactive ingredients.

Storage

  • Store at room temperature between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Excursions are permitted between 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F).

Reviews

“After struggling with recurrent tinea pedis for years, my dermatologist prescribed Mentax. The once-daily application was easy to stick with, and I noticed a significant reduction in itching within 48 hours. After the full four-week course, the infection was completely cleared and has not returned. Highly effective.” – M.B., Verified Patient

“As a practicing podiatrist, I find Mentax to be an invaluable tool in my arsenal against stubborn athlete’s foot. Its fungicidal action and the fact that it persists in the skin layers provide a clear advantage in achieving a clinical and mycological cure with a low relapse rate. Patient compliance is high due to the simple dosing.” – Dr. A. Evans, DPM

“I used this for a case of tinea cruris. The cream absorbed quickly without leaving a greasy residue, which was important for me. The redness and itching subsided within the first week, and the rash was completely gone before I finished the two-week tube. No irritation whatsoever.” – J.K., Verified Patient
