Yasmin: Trusted Hormonal Contraception with Acne Control
Yasmin is a combination oral contraceptive pill widely prescribed for pregnancy prevention and the management of moderate acne in women who choose an oral contraceptive for birth control. It contains a balanced formulation of ethinylestradiol and drospirenone, which work synergistically to suppress ovulation, alter cervical mucus, and regulate the endometrial lining. This medication is indicated for women seeking a reliable, reversible contraceptive method with the additional benefit of improving acne vulgaris. Proper use requires adherence to a strict dosing schedule and should be initiated under the guidance of a healthcare professional after a thorough evaluation of medical history and risk factors.
Features
- Contains 0.03 mg ethinylestradiol and 3 mg drospirenone per active tablet
- 21 active tablets and 7 inert (placebo) tablets per blister pack
- Monophasic formulation—each active pill has identical hormone levels
- Drospirenone is a spironolactone analogue with antiandrogenic and antimineralocorticoid properties
- Packaged in a user-friendly, day-of-the-week blister card for adherence
Benefits
- Provides highly effective contraception when taken correctly, with a Pearl Index of approximately 0.40–1.27
- Reduces the severity and incidence of moderate acne by decreasing sebum production and androgen activity
- May lead to more regular, lighter, and less painful menstrual cycles
- Offers potential improvement in premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) symptoms due to anti-mineralocorticoid effects
- Provides a reversible birth control option without the need for procedural intervention
Common use
Yasmin is primarily used for the prevention of pregnancy in women of reproductive age. It is also approved for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in women at least 14 years of age who have no known contraindications to oral contraceptive therapy, have achieved menarche, and desire contraception.
Dosage and direction
Take one tablet daily at approximately the same time each day, for 28 consecutive days: 21 active tablets followed by 7 placebo tablets. Begin the first pack on the first day of menstrual bleeding or the first Sunday after menstruation begins, as directed. Use a non-hormonal backup contraceptive method (e.g., condoms) for the first 7 days of the first cycle. After finishing a 28-day pack, begin a new pack the following day.
Precautions
- Not for use during pregnancy or in women with known or suspected pregnancy
- Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects; women over 35 years old who smoke should not use Yasmin
- May influence glucose tolerance; monitor diabetic patients carefully
- May increase blood pressure; check blood pressure periodically
- Drospirenone may increase serum potassium; use with caution in patients with conditions that predispose to hyperkalemia
Contraindications
- Thrombophlebitis, thromboembolic disorders, or a history of these conditions
- Cerebrovascular or coronary artery disease
- Known or suspected carcinoma of the breast or other estrogen-dependent neoplasia
- Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
- Cholestatic jaundice of pregnancy or jaundice with prior hormonal contraceptive use
- Hepatic adenomas or carcinomas, or active liver disease
- Known or suspected pregnancy
- Hypersensitivity to any component of Yasmin
Possible side effects
Common side effects may include:
- Nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps
- Headache, migraine
- Breast tenderness or enlargement
- Breakthrough bleeding, spotting
- Changes in weight or libido
Serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention:
- Sudden severe headache, vomiting, dizziness, or faintness

- Speech problems or weakness/numbness in limbs
- Severe chest pain, cough, or shortness of breath
- Severe abdominal pain

Drug interaction
Yasmin may interact with:
- Drugs that induce hepatic enzymes (e.g., rifampicin, barbiturates, carbamazepine), reducing contraceptive efficacy
- Antibiotics such as ampicillin and tetracyclines, which may decrease ethinylestradiol concentrations
- Anticoagulants; drospirenone may counteract potassium-sparing diuretics
- HIV protease inhibitors and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors
- St. John’s Wort, which may reduce contraceptive effectiveness
Missed dose
If one active tablet is missed (less than 24 hours late), take it as soon as remembered and the next tablet at the regular time. If missed by more than 24 hours, follow the package instructions for missed pills, which may require backup contraception for 7 days. If multiple tablets are missed, consult the patient leaflet or a healthcare provider.
Overdose
Serious ill effects have not been reported following overdose. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and withdrawal bleeding. There is no specific antidote; treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–30°C). Keep in the original blister pack to protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
