What is Cleocin?

Cleocin (clindamycin) is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu).

How to use Cleocin

Side effects of Cleocin

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have:

• diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
• stomach pain, cramping, or bloating;
• fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;
• white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips;
• jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes);
• pale skin, feeling light-headed or short of breath, rapid heart rate, trouble concentrating;
• upper stomach pain (that may spread to your back), nausea or vomiting, fast or pounding heartbeats;
• kidney problems -little or no urinating, painful or difficult urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath; or
• seizure (convulsions).

Common side effects may include:

• mild diarrhea;
• nausea, vomiting;
• stomach pain, gas; or
• vaginal itching or discharge.

Cleocin dosage

The usual adult dose is 150-300 mg every 6 hours. The total daily dose should not exceed 1.8 g. For the treatment of serious infections, the usual adult dose is 300-450 mg every 6 hours. The total daily dose should not exceed 4.5 g.

Cleocin interactions

Some products that may interact with this drug include: "blood thinners" (such as warfarin), live oral typhoid vaccine. Cleocin precautions

Older adults may be more likely to have side effects from this medicine. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.

It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
