Common use
Alavert is commonly used for the relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever), such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat. It may also be used for the management of chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives of unknown cause), providing relief from itching and reducing the number and size of hives.
Dosage and direction
For adults and children 6 years of age and older: Take one 10 mg tablet or two teaspoonfuls (10 mg) of syrup once daily. Do not exceed the recommended dose. For orally disintegrating tablets: place on tongue; tablet disintegrates rapidly and can be swallowed with or without water. Take Alavert on an empty stomach for optimal absorption, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
Precautions
Do not use if you have ever had an allergic reaction to loratadine or any of the inactive ingredients. Consult a doctor before use if you have kidney or liver disease. Stop use and ask a doctor if an allergic reaction to this product occurs. If symptoms do not improve within 3 days or are accompanied by fever, consult a healthcare provider. Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.
Contraindications
Alavert is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to loratadine or any component of the formulation. It should not be used in children under 6 years of age unless directed by a physician.
Possible side effect
While generally well-tolerated, some users may experience side effects including headache, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, nervousness, or stomach upset. These are typically mild and transient. If any side effect persists or worsens, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.
Drug interaction
Loratadine is metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 and to a lesser extent by CYP2D6. Concomitant use with ketoconazole, erythromycin, or cimetidine may increase loratadine plasma concentrations, though this is not typically associated with increased adverse effects. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Overdose
In case of suspected overdose, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, rapid heartbeat, and headache. Provide supportive care and symptomatic treatment as necessary.
Storage
Store at room temperature (68-77°F or 20-25°C) in a dry place. Keep the container tightly closed and protect from light and moisture. Do not use if the blister pack or bottle seal is broken. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
