Aleve: Targeted Relief for Lasting Pain Management

Aleve (naproxen sodium) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) formulated to provide long-lasting relief from minor aches and pains. Its active ingredient, naproxen sodium, works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body, offering up to 12 hours of continuous relief with a single dose. This makes it a preferred choice for individuals suffering from conditions such as arthritis, muscle aches, backaches, and menstrual cramps. Clinically proven and available over-the-counter, Aleve provides a reliable solution for managing pain and inflammation, allowing users to maintain their daily activities with minimal interruption. Its extended-release formula ensures sustained efficacy, reducing the frequency of dosing and enhancing patient compliance.

Features

  • Active Ingredient: Naproxen sodium (220 mg per tablet/caplet)
  • Dosage Form: Oral tablets, caplets, and liquid gels
  • Duration of Relief: Up to 12 hours per dose

  • Effectively reduces inflammation at the site of pain, addressing the root cause of discomfort.
  • Helps improve mobility and functionality in individuals with chronic pain conditions like osteoarthritis.
  • Allows for uninterrupted sleep and daily activities by maintaining consistent pain control.
  • Non-sedating formula ensures users can remain alert and productive while managing pain.
  • Over-the-counter accessibility offers convenience without the need for a prescription.

Common use

Aleve is commonly used for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains associated with conditions such as headaches, muscle aches, backaches, dental pain, menstrual cramps, and the common cold. It is also indicated for the reduction of fever and for the pain and inflammation of arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it particularly effective for musculoskeletal pain and inflammatory conditions.

Dosage and direction

For adults and children 12 years and older: take 1 tablet/caplet every 8 to 12 hours while symptoms persist. For the first dose, you may take 2 tablets/caplets within the first hour. Do not exceed 2 tablets/caplets in any 8- to 12-hour period, and do not exceed 3 tablets/caplets in 24 hours. The smallest effective dose should be used for the shortest duration necessary. Swallow whole with a full glass of water; do not crush, chew, or dissolve the tablet. Take with food or milk to minimize stomach upset.

Precautions

  • Do not use for more than 10 days for pain or 3 days for fever unless directed by a doctor.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication, as it may increase the risk of stomach bleeding.
  • Consult a doctor before use if you have a history of stomach ulcers, bleeding problems, heart disease, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, asthma, or if you are taking a diuretic.
  • Not recommended for use during the last trimester of pregnancy.
  • Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Contraindications

Aleve is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to naproxen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs. It should not be used in individuals who have experienced asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs. Contraindicated in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Do not use if you have a history of gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation related to previous NSAID therapy.

Possible side effect

Common side effects may include nausea, heartburn, stomach pain, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, or mild itching. Serious side effects, though rare, can include signs of gastrointestinal bleeding (such as black/tarry stools or vomiting blood), symptoms of heart problems (chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness on one side of the body), severe skin reaction, liver problems (nausea, fatigue, jaundice), or kidney problems (change in the amount of urine). Discontinue use and seek medical attention if any severe side effects occur.

Drug interaction

Aleve may interact with other medications, including:

  • Other NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen)
  • Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin)

  • ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), or diuretics
  • Lithium or methotrexate

Consult a healthcare provider before combining Aleve with any other medication.

Since Aleve is used as needed for pain relief, it does not have a strict dosing schedule. If you are using it regularly and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness, black or bloody stools, coughing up blood, shallow breathing, fainting, or coma. In case of suspected overdose, seek emergency medical attention or call a poison control center immediately. Do not induce vomiting unless directed by medical personnel.
