Acivir Pills is an antiviral medication. It slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus in the body. It will not cure herpes, but it can lessen the symptoms of the infection. Acivir Pills is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses, such as genital herpes, cold sores, shingles, and chickenpox. Acivir Pills may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

You should not take Acivir Pills if you are allergic to acyclovir or valacyclovir (Valtrex). To make sure Acivir Pills is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

• kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis);
• a weak immune system (caused by disease or by using certain medicine); or
• if you have received a kidney transplant.

FDA pregnancy category B. Acivir Pills is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.

It is not known whether acyclovir passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Older adults may be more likely to have side effects on their kidneys. Acyclovir is not approved for preventing transmission of the herpes virus. This medication only treats viral infections.

How should I take Acivir Pills?

Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

Acivir Pills is usually given every 4 hours. Follow your doctor's instructions.

Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.

To take Acivir Pills for genital herpes, you should take 200 mg every 4 hours, 5 times a day for 10 days. Follow your doctor's instructions.

To take Acivir Pills for cold sores or shingles, you should start taking it at the first sign of a cold sore or chickenpox. This medicine can be taken with or without food. Drink plenty of water while you are taking Acivir Pills.

To treat genital herpes it is important to use Acivir Pills for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The virus can spread to other parts of your body and cause serious health problems.

Acivir Pills can affect your immune system. Your blood may need to be tested often. You may need more frequent medical check-ups if you have a weakened immune system. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using this medicine.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What should I avoid while taking Acivir Pills?

Avoid contact with people who have colds or infections. Tell your doctor if you have been exposed to the chickenpox or measles.

Acivir Pills side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Some people using this medicine have engaged in activity such as driving, eating, or engaging in sexual activity and later realizing they are asleep. If this happens to you, stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

• changes in your hearing;
• trouble breathing;
• swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet;
• confusion, hallucinations;
• fast or pounding heartbeats;
• increased thirst and urination;
• drowsiness, weakness; or
• a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out.

Common Acivir Pills side effects may include:

• mild itching or skin rash;
• nausea, vomiting;
• dizziness; or
• headache.
