Important Information
You should not use Myambutol if you are allergic to it, or if you have:
- vision problems caused by a previous dose of Myambutol.
To make sure Myambutol is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:
- liver disease;
- kidney disease;
- diabetes;
- gout;
- a blood disorder; or
- if you take a blood thinner (warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven).
It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
Myambutol can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using this medicine.
Myambutol is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
How should I take Myambutol?
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Use the medicine exactly as directed.
Take Myambutol on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. You may need to take this medicine for several months to treat your TB. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared.
Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
While using Myambutol, you may need frequent blood tests. Your vision will also be checked often. You will need to have a negative pregnancy test before starting this treatment.
If you have ever had hepatitis B, Myambutol can cause this virus to become active or get worse. You will need frequent blood tests and liver function tests for several months after you stop using this medicine.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
You should not stop using Myambutol unless your doctor tells you to.
Use Myambutol Ethambutol Oral Suspension with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially vision problems.
Myambutol Ethambutol Oral Suspension is NOT RECOMMENDED for use in children younger than 18 years old.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Myambutol Ethambutol Oral Suspension has been shown to cause harm to the fetus. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to have a negative pregnancy test before starting this treatment. Myambutol Ethambutol Oral Suspension is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Myambutol Ethambutol Oral Suspension, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.
All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects.
Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:
- dizziness;
- headache;
- loss of appetite;
- nausea;
- stomach pain or upset;
- tiredness;
- trouble sleeping; or
- weight loss.
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue);
- bloody or watery diarrhea;
- fever, chills, or persistent sore throat;
- red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin;
- seizures;
- severe or persistent headache or dizziness;
- shortness of breath;
- vision changes.
